Censorship of theatrical films has existed since time immemorial. On one hand, it ensures that people don’t see any provocative content and on the other, it is about censoring the voice of individual filmmakers who usually fall back against a powerful government.

But amidst this dilemma, we must acknowledge that OTTs are coming under the eyes of governments. When films are released directly on OTT platforms then they skip the process of censorship. So they have the legal freedom to show whatever they want. But not anymore.

Binged informed its readers about the statement of I&B minister Anurag Thakur where he talked about bringing censorship on OTT platforms.

Now, the UK Government has brought this vision to action. They have indeed brought the long awaited rule that would curb platforms like Netflix, Prime Video, and Disney+.

The newly made Media Bill can fine up to £250,000 (₹2,53,46,050) or restricted in the UK entirely if they break rules around harmful material that have applied to public broadcasters for decades.

This plan will ensure that the streaming platforms don’t show content that hampers the rules in the UK. With the British government bringing this law, Indian authorities can also haste the long awaited demand for censorship.

Whatever update may follow, Binged will inform its readers.
